We all have bad days at work, which can make us question if we are on the right path in our career. But how do you know if you’re just going through a rough patch or if it’s really time to consider a career change?
1. You don’t feel excited about your career path
Why did you get on the career path you are currently on? Do you remember? And are you still on the right track?
Often our career takes us on detours from our goals. Some of these detours will bring you closer to what you want, but some of them will get you distracted. Also, the goals you have set years ago just might not be relevant to you anymore. You change and your dreams change. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about, but it is always a good idea to check in with yourself and your goals. Are you still working on achieving your goals? Have your goals changed? Are your goals coming from your heart or are you distracted by vanity goals, like success or fame? Is your current role taking you where you want to go in your career? If the answer is no, it might be time to consider a career change.
2. You just don’t really care
You go to work because it pays the bills. You might even enjoy socialising with your colleagues or you enjoy the perks your job has. But if you’re really honest with yourself, you just don’t really care about your job anymore. You are probably very familiar with the Sunday Night Dread and you notice yourself living for the weekends.
It’s not realistic to get excited about all parts of your job. But when it’s week after week, and project after project that doesn’t get you excited and you find it hard to find joy in the majority of your tasks, it might be time for a change.
3. Your body is sending you signals
One of the clearest and most confronting signs that it might be time for a career change is your body sending you signals that it’s just not happy. Being a bit tired or having to drag yourself out of bed in the morning every now and then are no reason to get worried. But when things get worse it is wise to listen to what your body is telling you.
Fatigue, anxiety attacks, migraines, tension headaches and sore muscles are all signals that your body is giving you that it might be time for a change.
